Joining Psi Phi Beta

Thank your for you interest in Psi Phi Beta Fraternity.

We are brothers of Psi Phi Beta Fraternity originally chartered in 1923 to serve the Buffalo State College community. We have two brother chapters: Gamma (1925) SUNY College at Oswego and Delta (1948) SUNY College at Potsdam.

Our Alumni Association at Beta Chapter was rechartered at Buffalo State College on June 12, 2002. The first two refounding fathers of our undergraduate chapter were formally inducted on March 28, 2004, and the remaining by fall of that year. Our first Faculty Advisor - Honorary Brother was inducted in the spring 2005 semester. It is our goal to earn full recognition for our fraternity in Buffalo by late 2006.

Our mission is as a fraternity and not-for-profit business organization with our focus on Service-Learning. We plan to promote social, intellectual, moral, fraternal, and democratic living among the members of this organization. To help them to maintain, live and grow in co-operation, peace, and happiness. We plan to accomplish this mission for each Associate Member Class through their participation and successful completion of our Associate Member Education Program.

Membership in Psi Phi Beta Fraternity shall be determined according to the guidelines set forth in the Buffalo State College Greek Organizations: Recognition and Governance Policies, Revised May, 2005.

Article IV. Membership, Rush and New Member Education Requirements

Section A. Membership

Membership in organizations shall be determined locally.
Members will be admitted in compliance with the SUNY Board of Trustees and Buffalo State College non-discriminatory policy, although chapters may be single sex under Title IX.
Members must be full time Buffalo State College students.
Member prospects must have a minimum of 12 hours as a matriculated student at a college campus before participation in new member education activities. In other words, no first semester freshmen are permitted to participate.
To continue active membership, an individual must maintain a 2.0 grade point average (GPA).

Section B. Rush and *New Member Education

Rush and new member education periods will be designated annually by the Greek
Liaison. All rush and new member education activities will be completed no later than three weeks before the first date of final examinations.
All prospective new members and the members of each organization responsible for
intake and new member activities must attend a College sponsored information session before new member education activities.
All rush/new member education activities must be in compliance with the New York
State Anti-Hazing Law. It is the responsibility of each organization and each member to understand the law and College policy and to adopt and implement healthy and constructive new member education programs.

*Psi Phi Beta Fraternity's new member education program is entitled Paths Leading to Brotherhood. There are as the name suggests, various ways of earning brother status. It is a modern, peer-based Associate Member Education Program, and focuses on the betterment of the body, mind, and spirit of each associate member. This is achieved through educationally sound, structured and rewarding activities, which conclude in celebration of the accomplishment(s). With our focus on service-learning, we will guide our associate members to discover the relationship that exists between the values they learned during their career-related, service-learning project and relate them by reflection, to the original ideals and intents of Psi Phi Fraternity.

Some Information about Fraternities to Parents

According to the North American Interfraternity Conference, your son will be making the transition from high school or a community college to a four-year college or university. This might seem like an imposing challenge.

He might have a few questions to ask himself. Will I be able to?

Succeed academically?

Make new friends?

Get involved in campus organizations with similar interests?

Develop my character and build leadership skills that will enable me to become a better person?

Best prepare for my career?

It is in your son's best interest that he is well informed before committing to an organization!

What's in it for YOU?

According to the Panhellenic Editors Conference, it is not an easy question to answer.

The college years are unlike any others in life, and the friends with whom you share this experience remain in your heart and thoughts for a lifetime.

After graduation, a prominent fraternity member expressed the following: "Without the interest, friendship, and help from my brothers, I might have been one if the unfortunate who didn't finish school. It was their interest and guidance that pulled me through some rough times."

There is much to be learned in the fraternity chapter. These are lessons that can not be learned in the classroom. The chapter is a working model of a democratic society, along the idea of a town meeting. Each member has the right to be heard and cast his vote. The group strives for achieving a balance between freedom of the individual and the welfare of all.
